Keeping It Interesting

Surprise Me
My Thoughts

The Belle
Sophie Kinsella has slowly but surely become one of my go-to authors for fun and light-hearted but not superficial read. Her stories have lovely themes, fantastic heroines, and more than enough humor to go around. Her newest book Surprise Me fit this bill.
After Sylvie and Dan go to the doctor who predicts they will live-very-long lives, they both have a kind of shock. If they're looking at another 60 years together, how will they not get sick of each other and keep things interesting. Sylvie gets the 'great' idea to set up surprises for one another to show them how much they love each other and keep it fun. These surprises lead to...interesting situations. Of course, good intentions get led completely awry with some very funny conclusions.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. I'd even go so far as to say I really liked, especially at the end. I loved how Sylvie dealt with the big conflict in the end. She was a heroine who didn't realize her own strength until she had to face it head on. I loved the setting because England is always a win. And I loved the end but no spoilers so sorry about that.

The Beast
While I felt like I was reading along at a good click of speed, the first half of this book seemed to last forever with not a lot happening. It felt way too long and had surprise shenanigans one after another and I got a little bored. Then at the 50% mark the book did pick up but it went in a completely different direction than I expected. It got interesting because there was this long withheld secret that Sylvie is trying to figure out. It led to the ending that I loved but overall it felt just a bit strange the departure took.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and it felt very Kinsella in nature but I think it could have been a bit shorter in the beginning with the surprises.
